PLAN
Founded in 2009, Sustainable Theatre Project is a nonprofit collaborative ensemble with the mission to create entertaining, affordable and socially relevant theatre for the city of Austin, while maintaining the highest possible standards of sustainability as budget and all practical means allow. STP seeks to produce a wide diversity of theatrical genres steeped in fine-tuned dedication to quality and excellence. STPs foundational belief is that environmentally sustainable practice creates potential for an extreme efficiency that in turn leads to organizational sustainability, offering greater pay to artists, increased production quality and lower ticket prices. STP seeks to address the wasteful habits of the theatre and works toward opening a new zero waste theatre venue for all the established and emerging theatre companies in Austin and their audiences to call home.
We believe that a respect for the environment, the earth, our home, is the highest gesture of respect to the human being. We believe the vitality of the art of theatre can be strengthened and cemented by applying sustainable practices. Our commitment to artistic excellence is equal to our commitment to sustainable practices. Our business model inextricably links these two subagendas
in to one super agenda.
The day-to-day functionality of the sub-agendas are as follows:
ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE
• Challenge, celebrate and respect the human spirit.
• Offer a viable source of professional entertainment to adults, elderly, children, multi-cultural groups and lower-income families.
• Produce socially and communally germane plays, classical and contemporary, critically acclaimed and brand new works.
• Promote a collaborative working environment with a strong passion for excellence and a critical yet personable drive for quality in each of the crafts practiced in the theatre.
• Offer educational initiatives to the citizens of Austin.
SUSTAINABLE EXCELLENCE
• Respect and cherish the fragility of our environment and our
dependence on environmental resources.
• Seek to maintain the end goal of being zero-waste
• Seek alternatives to traditionally wasteful practices in all aspects and areas of the theatre.
• Use recyclable, renewable and reusable sources of material and energy.
• Use materials and energy efficiently and conservatively.
HISTORY
The Sustainable Theatre Project is the culmination of many years of planning. Ten Years ago when Derek Kolluri and Larry Mitchell met they were company members of Independent Freeform theatre in Emporia, KS. The IF theatre operated in tandem with the University program the two attended. Two years later, when Ryan Hamilton joined the program, he also became interested in the development of a theatre company. The three men collaborated in a combined 30 plus productions, classes and collaborations while in Emporia, both in the University program and the student run IF organization. The aspirations of the three at the time were well crafted but still illusory, and thereby put on hold so that each could continue their individual academic and professional pursuits. Kolluri and Mitchell both attended the University of Arkansas seeking MFAs in theatre, Larry in playwriting and Derek in acting. The two worked together closely. Many times Larry wrote and developed characters in his plays for Derek to perform. Ryan continued to maintain contact with Larry and Derek, continuing to work with the two when possible. It was at the University of Arkansas that Derek and Larry met Molly Fonseca. Molly was also an MFA candidate in acting. Derek and Molly both had individual aspirations to open and operate theatre companies and as ideas were shared, Molly and Derek came to realize that their individual visions created a more rounded and inclusive mission if combined. In their third year at the University of Arkansas, Derek, Molly and Larry began planning to open a theatre company. Ryan was brought back into the process and planning became more concrete.
The decision to base ourselves in Austin stems from the incredible community support behind independent and upstart professional theatres alike. Austin is the home of STP and all of our plans are for this are centered around strengthening the Austin Theatre community.
What brings us together and drives the passion to operate the Sustainable Theatre Project is the belief that theatre is a unique forum, the only forum of its kind, that brings together individuals into a communion and presents work that challenges and inspires our perceptions of what it means to be a human being alive in the world at this time. The theatre is our sanctuary, we believe in its power and we dedicate ourselves to the potential theatre holds.
